Are Orange Hi-Vis Jackets Suitable for Landscapers?

Are Orange Hi-Vis Jackets Suitable for Landscapers?

Yes is the simple answer—orange hi-vis jackets can be an excellent choice for landscapers simply because they standout against nature such as forests, fields, bushes and natural habitats, but that's based on the visibility aspect provided they meet the visibility requirements of the job. The colour orange creates a clear contrast from the landscape setting, and that's why it is the go-to uniform colour for Rail work.

The important distinction is between a jacket that is simply orange and a certified high-visibility garment designed to make its wearer easier to see. Colour matters, but it is only one part of choosing suitable protective workwear.

Landscaping covers a wide variety of working environments. A gardener planting borders in an enclosed garden faces different visibility concerns from a contractor maintaining roadside verges, working around excavators or unloading materials beside a busy access road. The right jacket should reflect those differences rather than being chosen solely because it looks bright.

For landscapers and professional garden maintenance businesses, the most useful question is therefore not simply, “Is orange ideal? but rather what other aspects of the orange jacket does it bring to the garden table? often landscapers work with water hoses and jet wash equipment! So being waterproof could certainly be an additional feature against the splashes of the jet wash machine. Lets look at water/rain protection next as a a superb feature to have.

Rain Protection, what to look out for in the jacket.

An orange hi-vis jacket is not necessarily waterproof. Visibility certification and rain protection address different properties. EN 343 standard covers class 1-4 with class 4 having the highest Water Penetration Resistance for protection in rain, snow or fog. Its outdoor work, weather can be unpredictable, so for rainy months we consider wearing a certified orange jacket with EN343.

For wet-weather landscaping, ask for the jacket’s rain-protection information as well as its visibility classification. Look closely at the manufacturer’s description of the complete garment rather than relying on phrases such as “all-weather” or “outdoor workwear”. Waterproofness is measured in mm, look out for the following info:

5,000 mm: Protects against a light drizzle and short burst of light showers.
10,000 mm: Standard protection for general outdoor work in medium rain participation.
15,000 mm: High-performance suitable for long-duration rain exposure.
20,000 mm: (Class 4): Stormy, heavy-duty weather conditions.
Tip: on the lower rain protection level, look out for waterproof zips and taped seams!

What Makes an Orange Jacket High Visibility?

A genuine certified hi-vis jacket does more than add a bright colour to a uniform. Its visibility performance comes from the materials used and the way those materials are arranged.

Fluorescent fabric improves visibility in day and night, no matter what the weather. It uses fluorescent pigments to convert some ultraviolet light into visible light, making the material appear brighter than an equivalent non-fluorescent colour. This can be particularly useful in conditions such as cloudy overcast weather, dawn and dusk. The added retroreflective strips serve a different purpose: they return light towards its source, helping a driver see the wearer when vehicle headlights illuminate the garment.

These properties are complementary, not interchangeable. Fluorescent orange fabric does not make a worker glow in complete darkness, and reflective tape needs suitable illumination to be effective. A landscaper working before sunrise should not assume that a bright orange jacket alone provides adequate visibility. Lighting, the position of the worker and the direction from which vehicles approach still matter.

Since landscapers work with moving machinery in particular excavators, or trucks delivering materials for the job, a orange hi vis work jacket with the correct standards would be perfect for the job to increase safety.

Look out for the relevant high-visibility standard, ISO 20471, which addresses colour, retroreflection, minimum material areas and placement.

Fit and Freedom of Movement Matter

Landscapers need to bend, kneel, reach and handle tools. HSE advises choosing PPE that suits the individual, taking account of size, fit, weight and compatibility. Poorly fitting clothing can introduce additional problems; excessively long sleeves, for instance, can increase entanglement risk.

A useful fitting exercise is to ask workers to try representative movements while wearing their normal underlying layers. The aim is not to buy the largest jacket available for comfort, but to find a fit that allows movement without leaving unnecessary loose material.

Where the work includes tree operations or machinery, clothing design needs particular attention. HSE’s chainsaw guidance specifies non-snag outer clothing, reinforcing the importance of considering how a jacket behaves during the task—not just how it fits when someone stands still.

Orange Hi-Vis Does Not Replace Other Protective Equipment

A waterproof visibility jacket addresses the need to be seen and stay dry in wet conditions. It should not be assumed to provide chainsaw protection or other specialist protection unless those qualities are separately specified.

The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) is Britain’s national regulator for workplace health and safety.

For chainsaw work, HSE requires appropriate task-specific PPE and identifies items including suitable head, eye, hearing, hand, leg and foot protection. High-visibility clothing may also be appropriate where justified by the risk assessment, but it is an addition to the relevant protective equipment, not a substitute for it.

The complete combination also needs checking. PPE worn together must not interfere with the protection each item provides. A landscaper’s jacket should therefore be assessed alongside any helmet, hearing protection, harness or other equipment required for the work.
